Think there may be an issue with your insulation? It’s worth looking into. For one, there’s the safety aspect. Incorrectly installed or damaged insulation could cause a fire hazard, and put your home at risk. More practically, though, insufficient or incorrectly installed insulation could be costing you money in heating and air conditioning. Some estimates state that proper insulation can save about 15% on energy bills. That’s too much to ignore – not to mention having to deal with a home that’s either too hot or too cold based on the season.

Insulation is a critically important part of your home,  but few people really understand what it does. We also don't commonly see our home's insulating material, so the issue is very much out of sight, and out of mind.

Insulation is critical to maintaining comfortable temperatures in your home.  Inserted into walls and attics, insulation keeps warm air in, and in the summertime, allows your home to cool.

Without insulation, your home or structure would be terribly uncomfortable, especially in extreme heat, or cold. Homes lacking proper insulation are also overly expensive to heat and cool, meaning a significant cost to homeowners.

Insulation complements your HVAC (your heating and AC systems) by trapping the heated or cooled air it produces, meaning your system doesn’t need to work as hard. The benefit here is a significant cost savings as well.
While you may not think about it much, insulation is critical for a few reasons. And substandard or incorrectly installed insulation can decrease the value of a home, and cause safety issues. Not to mention, it can raise your heating and cooling expenses.

OUR SERVICES:

Attic Insulation - Read More

We install and repair attic insulation in your home or structure. Properly insulated attics are critical to keeping your home warm in the winter, and cool in the summer and limiting energy expenditures. Attics are also generally a neglected afterthought, and companies may tend to move rapidly while insulating them. Don’t let this be the case. Without proper insulation (and a proper installation job), your heat will seep out of your home through your attic, and you’ll see an increase in your energy bills. Avoid this by ensuring your attic is properly insulated. Our team specializes in insulating attics and crawlspaces to achieve the optimal level of insulation.
Our attic insulation services include an assessment of your attic, and a discussion about your needs. We’ll assist you in selecting the right insulating material and we’ll acquire it prior to returning. Once on-site, we’ll take the necessary steps to insulate your attic and associated crawlspaces. Once the attic insulation work is complete, we’ll conduct a thorough quality check, and review your new attic with you.  After our team insulates your attic, there won’t be much, if anything for you to do. Our work does not require maintenance or upkeep – so you can relax in your home and enjoy the savings you’ll see in your energy bill.

Air Sealing - Read More

Air sealing is exactly what it sounds like – our team will visit your home and find any location, crack, or crevice where air may be escaping, or entering your home. Then we’ll seal them with an appropriate insulating material. Airflow like this is the enemy when it comes to reducing heating and cooling bills, and maintaining a consistent temperature in your home. While a small, 1.5 millimeter crack around a window may not sound like a lot, add a few of those up and you’re actually losing a large amount of heat – and letting cold air into your home.  This makes it hard to maintain a consistent, pleasurable temperature. How do you know if you need Air Sealing? It may be as easy as seeing a crack around a window or door frame, an improperly installed insulating or weather strip, or literally a hole in your wall. We most frequently see issues around windows, doors, joists and sill plates, pull-down stairs, light fixtures, duct chases, around pipes and wires, near chimneys, between drywall frames, near sump holes, around basement windows, near fans and plumbing openings, and in a bunch of other places. You may not be able to see anything, but may feel drafty cold air coming in from outside. Or, we may be able to identify an issue during an energy audit. Regardless, our Air Sealing services will fix the problem. When you call us, we’ll visit your home and look at any issues you identify for us. Then, we’ll test for air leakage around other areas we commonly see it. After we’ve identified any air leakage locations, we’ll present you with an insulation plan, and will get to work. Most of our clients have been surprised at home many issues we’ve identified in their homes – and you may be too! Once complete, you can expect rooms that are typically cold in the winter to be warmer, and can expect cooler rooms during the summer. Plus, you may notice a savings in your heating and cooling bills.

WALL INSULATION - Read More

We install any type of wall insulation you may need in your home. We have extensive experience with wall, basement, attic, and exterior wall insulation, and look forward to assisting you with your insulation project.
Proper wall insulation is critical to your home’s ability to retain heat during the winter and keep cool air in during the summer. Surprisingly though, many structures suffer from poor or substandard insulation inside their walls. This can lead to less than ideal conditions inside, and to higher heating and cooling bills. Additionally, these conditions can force your HVAC systems to work harder – placing unnecessary wear which will result in higher maintenance costs in the future. Our team can assess the insulating quality of your walls, and offer a range of wall insulation services. We pack walls with cellulose insulation or other material as applicable. Best of all, we can help at any point during the life of your home or structure. Are you building a home? Walls are obviously easiest to insulate as a home is built, but there are a lot of things we can do even after a home is finished. Our team can also add insulation to finished walls increasing your home’s R-values, and lowering your bills.

GARAGE INSULATION - Read More

Garage insulation may or may not be important to your home, depending on the way your structure is configured. Here’s the bottom line: if your garage is detached from the house, you don’t need to worry about insulating it. If your garage is attached to your home, you should seriously consider ensuring it is properly insulated. If your garage is detached, but you have a bonus room or other room above it that is heated or cooled, you may want to consider insulating the garage as well. Our team comes with a great deal of garage insulation experience, and we’re happy to help you tackle your garage insulation project. Garage insulation is important if your garage is attached to your home, or if you have a heated or cooled room above your garage. Why? Because, any room adjacent to your garage is likely suffering from a loss of heat, or cold air because its unlikely that your garage is properly or sufficiently insulated. Start with the garage walls. They should be properly insulated, just like the rest of your home to ensure that warm air stays in, and (most importantly) cold air from the outside doesn’t undermine adjacent rooms. We can fill walls with insulation – even if they’re already standing! Next, we look at the garage ceiling. This is especially important if there are rooms above your garage. If garage ceilings aren’t sufficiently insulated, cold air can seep into the rooms above your garage, making them drafty and inhospitable. Conversely, in the summer, they could get too hot to be comfortable.
Do you use your garage for something other than storing vehicles? Perhaps you have a gym in your garage, or a workshop? In this case, it makes even more sense to insulate, because quality insulation will make your space more useful, year-round.  Unsure if your garage needs attention? Have us out for an assessment or a home energy audit. If we identify issues, we can present you with options and discuss the right insulating material and installation plan. Call today.

CRAWLSPACE INSULATION - Read More

First, what are we talking about when we say “crawlspace”? A crawlspace is the area under your home – it usually has a dirt floor, and above it is the floor of your home. This is a prime area for heat loss – as cold air from the ground comes directly upwards and can seep into your home. Oftentimes, these areas are overlooked, or tended to last, and they rarely get the attention they need. In addition to cold air leaking in, consider this: if any of your HVAC or heating utilities are located in your crawlspace (like a water heater) cold or hot air may be forcing them to work harder – thereby increasing your energy bills. Avoid this with proper insulation in your crawlspace. So what is the best type of insulation for a crawl space? We like rigid foam type insulations. These help maintain a proper barrier and keep cold air out. Rigid foam is also reliable, and will not lose its R-value over time. It is moisture proof and inhibits the growth of mold, and is a great all-around choice for your crawlspace. If we can avoid it, we urge homeowners to stay away from fiberglass or similar types of insulating material. Fiberglass is a cotton-candy like material that, unfortunately, can absorb moisture and will degrade over time. It can mold over time, and can lose its R-value when wet or old. We’ve replaced many homes’ fiberglass batt insulation with rigid insulation, and the results are a marked improvement.

BASEMENT INSULATION - Read More

If your basement is cold and drafty – or you don’t like spending time there because its damp and dreary, we have a solution for you. Basement insulation can be used to completely renovate and unlock a potentially huge space within your home; your basement. Our team is experienced in basement insulation projects, and can help turn that space into an exciting and enjoyable space – simply through insulation! Basement insulation can help create a warmer or cooler basement space, limit mold and mildew, seal and insulate air leakage in your home, and create a usable space where it may not have existed before. During basement insulation jobs, our team will assess where improvements can be made in your basement. Generally, these entail air leaks around doors, joists, sump pumps, and HVAC equipment. We’ll also look at your basement walls, and foundation, and add cellulose or other insulation as needed. Next we’ll look at specialty products for your space, and recommend those as needed. We’ll present a full basement insulation plan to you, acquire the materials, and get started. By the end of our work, you’ll have a fully-insulated basement that should help create a more enjoyable space that you and your family can use, and take advantage of.

SPRAY FOAM INSULATION - Read More

Spray Foam Insulation is one of our most popular services. During a spray foam insulation install, we’ll work with you to identify areas of your home that require additional insulation. We’ll present some options, including open and close cell and cellulose insulation options – and decide with you on what’s best. Then, our team will install insulation in whatever part of your home you need it – basement, attic, walls, and more. Spray foam insulation is superior to most types of solid insulation (depending on where you need it installed) because it fills gaps and crevices that other insulation types can miss. Spray foam is great for filling existing walls, filling around joists and supports, injecting into small or tight closed spaces, or adding to attics. Better yet, spray foam insulation resists insects and mold, and can be installed in a fire-resistant capacity. Spray foam has an outstanding R-value (generally higher than most other materials) and will save you money on heating and cooling bills. Spray foam insulation is also cost effective, doesn’t take long to install, and won’t make a mess. Call today to learn more. Need an estimate or assessment? Interested in insulating, but not sure what the best insulation material, or approach is? Give us a call today. We’ll be happy to come out and provide a quote, and get you started. No pressure.

HOME ENERGY AUDITS - Read More

Our team conducts home energy audits to determine where you could save money through increased insulation. Our team will come to your home and employ a variety of tools and techniques to audit your home’s energy use and loss, and determine where cost savings (associated with insulation) could be employed.
We assess insulation throughout your home, including type, age, condition, and installation. We search for appliances (like HVAC and water heater systems) that may be improperly insulated, and we search for air leakage sites around your home where warm air is escaping, and cold air could be entering your home.
After these areas are identified, we put together a plan to fix the issues we discovered. There’s no pressure, and whatever you’d like to address, we can.
Roll Insulation
Insulation Terms and Lingo:

What are batts?
Batts, or insulation batts are big pieces of insulating material. They are generally pre-cut, and are installed between studs and support beams – usually within a wall. They’re generally made from material like natural fiber, recycled material, plastic, mineral wool, or cellulose – although some of the most cost effective versions are fiberglass. These materials are generally easy to work with and install yourself in walls and ceilings.

What are rolls?
Rolls, or insulation rolls are large, blanket-like sections of insulating material similar to batts. They are larger, and come in longer lengths, allowing for more customization for installation projects. They are also easy to work with.

What are insulation rolls?
Insulation rolls are insulating materials that come in tight-bound rolls. The insulating material is thin, and works well as an initial application inside walls and ceilings.

What is Foam Board Insulation?
Foam board insulation is exactly what it sounds like – large, rigid panels of insulating material. But foam board insulation sections aren’t just like weak Styrofoam. They are reinforced with wood or metal, are built densely, and have high R-values. This makes them great for colder climates. Foam board insulation is great for basement walls, interior and exterior walls, and some ceiling applications. Despite a generally higher expense, foam board insulation is highly effective, and is a great “do it yourself” material.

What is Spray Foam Insulation?
Spray foam insulation is a liquid insulation which expands and hardens once applied. It is blown into position and is easy and fast to apply. There are to main types of spray foam insulation: open-cell, or closed cell. Open cell insulation has a lower R-Value, but is less expensive. Closed-cell insulation is denser and comes with a higher R-value, but is more expensive. In addition, you can purchase small cans of spray foam insulation which are useful for sealing cracks around doors, windows, or other fixtures where air leakage may occur.

What are Radiant Barriers?
Radiant barriers are great for high-heat environments, and work a little different than most insulation types. Radiant barriers are made from reflective material, and reflect heat away from homes. By doing so, they help homes retain more cool air – versus working solely to keep the cool air in. Radiant barriers are generally made from aluminum or kraft substrates, and reflect heat. They are great for roofs, garages, and some wall applications.

What are vapor barriers?
Vapor barriers are designed specifically to keep water and moisture from entering your home. They are most useful in cold environments, where tiny water molecules can infiltrate your walls and insulation, and cause mold, dampness, and even rot. Vapor barriers are generally installed after your main insulation is installed. Plan to apply them to exterior walls, and pay extra attention to homes constructed with wood or masonry.

What is cellulose insulation?
Cellulose insulation typically a loose-fill spray-in insulation made from a number of materials, to include recycled paper products. To make it fire-resistant, borate is added – which can also help keep insects and pests out.

What fiberglass insulation?
Fiberglass insulation is insulating material made from glass fibers. The material is the most common form of insulation, and comes in a variety of formats, including rolls, loose-fill, and batts. Fiberglass insulation is generally inexpensive, and easy to work with. Remember to wear proper personal protective equipment when working with this material.

What foam insulation?
Foam insulation can be cement based, but is generally produced with types of plastic. It is generally blown or sprayed in, but can also take the shape of foam boards.

What is mineral wool insulation?
Mineral wool insulation is a type of insulation made from natural minerals, combined with other materials – including waste products from molten metal. The material is fire resistant, has a decent R-Value, and comes in loose, batt, or roll format.

What are natural fiber insulations?
Less common, these types of insulating materials are made from natural materials, including hemp, straw, sheep’s wool, or similar elements. They tend to be versatile, and repel mold and insects.

What is denim insulation?
You may be surprised to hear that denim insulation is just that – denim! Denim insulation is made from recycled or excess denim cotton and is easy to install. It can be expensive though.
